Noble Consulting Surveyors have recently completed the Drainage as-constructed survey for Stage 2A of The Glades at Byford, near Perth in Western Australia. This As constructed survey was required to be completed in the D-Spec format. Take a look!
The survey comprised of over 100 storm water manholes and property connections as well as the same number of drainage and subsoil pipes. D-Spec is a relatively new form of Drainage as-con mapping and forms one aspect of the A-Spec System, this specification is being adopted very quickly by local governments and authorities throughout the country.
The rate at which this system is being adopted is for good reason, the enhanced as-con data puts a wealth of information into the fingertips of the relevant authority enabling a far greater understanding of the capabilities and location of the asset.
The D-Spec specification is designed to enhance the asset owners ability to integrate survey data into GIS asset management systems. The specification requires a great deal more data be measured than was previously captured in a typical Drainage as-constructed survey.
Some of the key elements required to be captured in the surveys include Lid Types, elevations and materials; Pit types and sizes, number of steps, Depth of pit, Pit names, horizontal location and much much more.
On top of the pit details, pipe details are captured with as much intricacy – including details such as direction of flow, material, size, construction type, upstream and downstream co-ordinates and elevations. Finally, the specification even has requirements for mapping property connections.
Once this data has been captured in the field it is then necessary to co-ordinate it, transform surveyed locations into the required co-ordinate system, organise attributes into a table corresponding to each Pit, Pipe and property connection; and finally convert the survey information into a format compatible with the consortium members’ GIS software.
This step is perhaps the most crucial, aside from ensuring that initial measurements are accurate, in providing a product of maximum benefit to the relevant council. The applications of this enhanced as-constructed format are immense; from improved future designs and an enhanced ability to determine the capacity of the system, to accurate location of each and every asset in the network long after they have been installed.
Noble Consulting Surveyors have invested a considerable amount of R&D into ensuring that we can provide D-Spec Surveys of the highest possible standards to our clients. In doing so we have been able to develop a system that is both highly efficient and maintains data integrity throughout each stage of the process.
